Review: Silverlake Shorts

Crowds were turned away at the door at this month’s packed Silverlake Shorts Night. Hosted monthly by El Cid on Sunset Blvd, the event aims to celebrate the work of local creatives and connect some of the entertainment industry’s up and coming minds. The features span anywhere from colorful animation to unsettling horror short films.

My second time at the event, I can personally say I’ve witnessed the massive success nights like these can be, it’s almost as if there’s a need for more casual visual art showcases in the community… Among some of the featured work on January’s edition of the event was Jaxon Whittington’s music video for Jadu Heart’s “Freedom”, an ensemble of colorful and creative characters that are simply “wishing for freedom”.

Whittington’s use of movement and enchanting hues keep the audience engaged for every second. In the shorts department was “Heineken” a comedic short by Will Duncan about a dog owner in distress with a creepy little plot twist. The crowd was absolutely eating it up, myself included. Another crowd favorite was Corwin’s own spoof music video dedicated to Grimace, the purple monster “tastebud” mascot of McDonald’s.

The music video paints the perfect picture of what it would be like to fall in love and run away with Grimace. All in all, a great night on the town featuring food, drinks, laughs, claymation, and Faith Hill. Check it out!
